PSAT for 8th graders, October 24

EGUSD prepares students for college readiness and supports their preparation for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The PSAT is offered to eighth grade students. Students do not have to sign up for the test and there is no cost. Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School will administer the PSAT on Wednesday, October 24th at 8:15 am sharp. Additional details will be provided to students and parents via Student VUE and Parent VUE.

The PSAT allows students to practice for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), a college entrance exam accepted by all colleges and universities. The results from the PSAT will allow school staff to identify students who are ready to take challenging college courses – such as honors and advanced placement – through AP Potential, a free service provided by the College Board.

To learn more about the benefits in taking the PSAT and how to prepare, please refer the Student Guide and documents below. If you have questions, please direct them to Mrs. Freeman, Head Counselor, at (916) 688-0080.

Student survey about social emotional learning, October 25
Educators nationwide have recognized the importance of social emotional skills as an important aspect of preparing students for success in college, career, and life. Evidence shows that social emotional skills such as self-efficacy and social awareness are linked to greater student success and provide valuable insights that test scores do not capture. In addition, the positive culture/climate of a school and its clear, consistent expectations play a vital role. Elements such as students’ sense of belonging and security at school can influence academic development.

On October 25th, Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School will embark on the third administration of a student survey that captures social emotional learning and culture/climate measures. This information is used to support social emotional development and strengthen our positive school culture/climate through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) implementation. It is our goal to improve our work to nurture student college and career readiness and to create environments in which they can achieve great success.

If you would like to review the questions on the student survey, a copy is available in your school’s front office. If you do not wish to have your child respond to the survey, you may request that your child not participate by completing the form at the bottom of the attached letter and returning it to Mrs. Freeman, Counselor, by October 14th.
