AVID

The AVID program is alive and strong at our campus!
 
AVID is an elective in the 7th and 8th grade class that helps students succeed in school and make it to college.  The AVID class is WORK, but it can be fun.  What do we do in the AVID elective?  Well, here's the list:
 
  • We learn to organize ourselves and have weekly binder checks
  • Complete our daily agenda, monitor our grades and create goals
  • Learn how to be a better learner, student, thinker, talker, writer, member of our society
  • Take notes and constantly practice the skill of note-taking
  • Collaborate with our peers by working in groups and playing tons of games
  • Tutor each other at least once a week
  • Take part in motivational activities - movies, guest speakers, games, projects
  • Go on field trips
  • Have fun being a part of a group of students who have the same goals and aspirations
  • And, believe it or not, a lot more!
 
AVID is not for everyone.  We expect our AVID students to have a background or a personality that is special or different, giving them the extra assistance and support to help them succeed like everyone else.
 
Here are some qualifications or descriptions of what an AVID student should be…
The AVID student…
 
  • may try hard in class, but needs the extra support to really be successful (ie. Organization skills, extra tutoring, collaborative support…)
  • has parents that did not go to college
  • has been historically underserved in four-year universities Latino and African American (although our program reflects the diversity of our school- Asian, Filipino, African American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, East Indian, Indian, Caucasian, etc..)
  • is motivated and is ready for the challenge and hard work required of honors and challenging math courses
  • may demonstratestrong citizenship skills in classes
  • demonstrates a strong desire to attend a four year university directly after high school
 
Students who…
  • Are not motivated
  • Are at risk (Below Basic, Far Below Basic)
  • Are Advanced students with parents who have received bachelor’s degrees
  • Classroom problems- disruptive, multiple detentions, frequent absences
 
!!!     AVID IS NOT A PROGRAM TO SAVE KIDS!  IT IS A PROGRAM TO HELP THOSE THAT WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL, BUT DO NOT KNOW HOW.
