Principal's Corner

Principal’s Corner Message
Dear EHMS Families, Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! Though we will be starting off in unfamiliar fashion, we are still excited for the school year to begin. As you know, this year all schools in Sacramento County are opening in a full distance learning format. This means that all learning will occur at home instead of in a classroom. Teachers, administrators, and district leaders have been laboring all summer to ensure that this school year is the best it can be under our current circumstances. It is our desire at Harris to have our students back on site, as we’ve created a culture where students are safe, feel loved, and get high quality instruction. However, safety is a priority and we are working hard to make distance learning a great experience for our students and families.

With that being said, we hope you are recharged and ready to start a new school year. As the principal at EHMS, we are eager to provide our students with a premium educational experience. Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School is a school that is enriched by diversity, strong instruction, and a loving atmosphere. We have the distinguished title of being a California Gold Ribbon School and California Honor Roll School, as we pride ourselves in assisting our students in learning today, so that they can lead tomorrow.

Our skilled and devoted staff is already planning and preparing for your child(ren), and all signs point to another incredibly prolific school year. The curriculum that your students will engage in is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring that your students are prepared for the rigors of high school, college and potential careers, by equipping them with the 21st century skills needed to be successful in their future endeavors. Our comprehensive site offers classes and programs such as Computer Technology, AVID, Leadership, Athletics, and Band, to give our students a well-rounded education, teaching them good study habits and self-discipline as well. The Elk Grove Unified School District’s Graduate Profile illustrates the standard level of accomplishment that we expect our students to possess as they graduate from our EGUSD schools. Our school will give students the opportunity to grow in the areas of problem-solving, communication, self-awareness, technology, community engagement and character.

Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School operates on a block schedule with 4 terms. At the end of a nine-week term, students will transition to another set of classes. Seventh and eighth grade Math, as well as seventh grade English, are year-long courses. This schedule allows students to engage in multiple subjects throughout the duration of the year, enriching their learning experience.

Parents & Guardians, we welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children. Your participation in such programs like our award-winning Parent University courses and C.O.L.T.S. Parent Organization are vital and encouraged. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure that your children reach their highest potential.

This year is going to be absolutely remarkable, filled with learning opportunities, awesome events and enriching activities. Again, your input is highly encouraged. Helpful tips and guidelines to assist your student in their school endeavors this year are posted in their EHMS agendas and on the school website. Here’s to an amazing year.
