Dress Code

Parents or guardians have the primary responsibility for appropriate standards of dress and grooming. However, as an educational entity, the Secondary Division of the Elk Grove Unified School District believes it has the responsibility to establish and maintain appropriate standards of dress and grooming that support a positive, wholesome and safe learning and teaching environment. The purpose of a dress and grooming code is to facilitate education, not to inhibit any person’s taste in attire or appearance. Students should be clean and neatly dressed in a manner that will be decent, not hazardous to the health and safety of the students, and not disruptive or distracting from the educational program of the school.

1. Clothing, jewelry and body markings must be free of writing, pictures or any insignia which appear to be crude, vulgar, profane, sexually suggestive, or which advocate racial, ethnic, or religious prejudice, or use of drugs or alcohol, or gangs. Belts or belt buckles with initials, bandanas, drawings, and/or offensive personalized writing on any clothing or backpack is prohibited. Belts must be fastened appropriately at the waist with a minimum of overlap.
2. Shoes must be worn at all times. Sandals are discouraged for safety reasons and flip flops are not allowed. Bedroom slippers are not permitted.
3. No sagging pants are permitted. Pants and bib overalls are to be properly fastened.
4. The wearing of billed hats free of commercial or athletic logos, jackets with hoods, Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School spirit wear, caps or hoods will be permitted outside only. Students will not be permitted to wear hair rollers, shower caps, hair rags, hairnets or other such grooming items to school.
5. Clothing and accessories that are disruptive to the learning environment will not be permitted. Pajamas are not acceptable attire at school.
6. Clothes shall sufficiently conceal undergarments at all times. See-through or fishnet fabrics, halter tops, off the shoulder or low cut tops, spaghetti straps, short/crop tops, muscle shirts, bare midriff and skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh are prohibited.
7. Pocket chains used to secure wallets are not allowed.
8. Any clothing or combination of clothing and/or accessories deemed or identified as gang apparel by the local law enforcement gang task force will be not permitted.

Coaches and teachers of technical and lab classes may impose specific dress requirements to accommodate the special needs or safety concerns of certain sports and/or activities. Consequences will be determined by severity of the offense.
