Principal's Corner Message

Families,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year and to the Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School family. I am thrilled to welcome last year’s 7th-grade class back as 8th-graders, and of course, I am just as excited to receive a new group of incoming 7th-graders. It is our goal to mold lifelong learners, preparing them for success while they are Colts, and in their future endeavors in high school, college, and career. At EHMS, we continue to use engaging teaching strategies to create a first-class educational experience for our Future College Graduates. We believe that our two-year academic and social development program is second to none.

It is my hope that after a well-deserved summer break, all stakeholders are rejuvenated and ready to start a new school year. EHMS is a California Gold Ribbon School and a four-time California Honor Roll School. Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School is an institution that is enriched by diversity, strong instruction, and a loving atmosphere.

Our Values

Our community includes a diverse set of experiences involving our students, staff, and families. I truly believe that it takes a coordinated effort as partners to ensure that our students get what they deserve: a safe, positive, and enriching experience each day at school. One of the ways we do that is by committing to four Core Values, which we call RICH. To be RICH means that we are RESPONSIBLE, have INTEGRITY, are CONSIDERATE, and are HARD-WORKING. These Core Values are central to how we treat others in the community, and it’s important that our staff, our students, and our families exemplify them. When we carry ourselves by these values, our students see themselves in a more positive light and are able to focus on learning.

Family Engagement

As in previous years, we will continue to include opportunities for families to participate in the school. We welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to your student’s journey, and I look forward to partnering with you so that our students can reach their greatest potential. Your participation in programs such as our award-winning Parent University program, the C.O.L.T.S. Parent Organization, Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students), Family Lunch Days, and various other events are vital and encouraged.

Our Programs

Our highly skilled and devoted staff are already planning and preparing various activities and high-quality academic lessons for your child(ren). All signs point to another incredibly prolific school year. The curriculum that your students will engage in is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring that your students are prepared for the rigors of high school, college, and potential careers, equipping them with the 21st-century skills needed to be successful in their future endeavors. Our comprehensive site offers classes and programs such as Computer Technology, AVID, Leadership, Athletics, and Band, which serve to give our students a well-rounded education, teaching them good study habits and self-discipline as well. The Elk Grove Unified School District’s Graduate Profile illustrates the standard level of accomplishment that we expect our students to possess as they graduate from our EGUSD schools. Our school will give students the opportunity to grow in the areas of problem-solving, communication, self-awareness, technology, community engagement, and character.

As in previous years, Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School operates on a block schedule with 4 terms. Students will take four courses per term in 85-minute classes. At the end of a nine-week term, students will transition to another set of classes. Seventh and eighth-grade Math, as well as seventh-grade English, are year-long courses. This schedule allows students to engage in multiple subjects throughout the duration of the year.

A Final Word

Finally, it is my goal that your child(ren) experience three things this year.

  • First and foremost, students should feel safe to be at school. Our staff works diligently to create a positive environment and help address problems proactively. If you feel that your child is having trouble or needs support, please reach out to a staff member. We care.
  • Second, each student should be successful academically in 100% of their classes. We expect our students to work hard, be organized, and take opportunities to revise their work to show improvement.
  • Third, each student should be connected to the school in at least one way beyond the academic setting. Involvement in athletics, activities, and clubs gives students meaning and helps build relationships with other students in a positive environment.

When students are safe, experience academic success, and get connected through activities, they are more likely to thrive.

This year is going to be remarkable. Again, your involvement and input is highly encouraged. Please look for a weekly communication from me that will include helpful information about events, activities, and school updates.

Let’s have a great year, and Go Colts!
